1. El Centro (The Old Town) – for first-time visitors
The historic Walled City consists of two neighborhoods, El Centro and San Diego, and both are very popular and have tons of accommodation options. Some sites merge them together since this is all an Old Town but I decided to separate it to give you more options to choose from.
The Historic Center (El Centro), is where to stay in Cartagena for first-timers! It’s your best option since all the attractions are located here. It’s also a very safe neighborhood.
Enjoy the charming narrow streets and street vendors selling tropical fruits, well-preserved colonial architecture, and a lively atmosphere day and night.
The Old City (Walled City) is a relic of Colombia’s colonial past, with its preserved walls dating from the 16th century.
Scholars believe that the city is called Cartagena de Indias as a reference to the Spanish city of Cartagena, from which the original settlers were from! Others believe that its coastline resembles that of Spain’s Cartagena. Anyways, a strong connection remains between the two cities.
Stroll past the bohemian Plaza de Santo Domingo (beautiful public square) or the Muelle de la Bodeguita Cartagena pier, take a picture in front of the iconic Torre del Reloj monument from the 1800s, or learn more about the history of the city in the Museum of Cartagena de Indias.
The most popular church in town, Santuario de San Pedro Claver, is also located here.
MY EXPERIENCE: I recommend booking your stay here in advance, as the best places tend to sell fast! Otherwise, you risk staying in a murky place like I did. As everything nice was already booked for our dates, we decided to book something outside of the city walls, and it was a disaster! We got the smallest, most horrible room, and there were girls downstairs who looked like ladies of the night. We had to find something overpriced in an area we felt safe in FAST.
Do note that the accommodation in the Centro is a bit more expensive, but it’ll be worth it because everything will be within easy walking distance, so you’ll spend less time and money commuting!
NOTE: El Centro can get loud at night, so beware if you’re a sensitive sleeper.

2. San Diego – where to stay in Cartagena for families
San Diego is a bohemian neighborhood located inside the Walled City, and it is just a stone’s throw away from the El Centro area (like a 5-10 min walk depending on where you are). You will love this district because it offers as much history (with its old churches and buildings) and a vibrant atmosphere as any other popular tourist destination but at a quieter pace!
And if you’re looking forward to trying the local food, here you can try the best street food in Cartagena (around the famous San Diego Square).
You MUST check out Las Bovedas, a former dungeon that now hosts quirky shops and bars for the ultimate tourist experience!
Cartagena is a UNESCO World Heritage Site since it comprises one of the world’s most extensive military fortification systems in South America!
Another must-see here is the house of the legendary author Gabriel Garcia Marquez (map)! They currently don’t offer tours, so it’s impossible to get inside, but it’s worth the trip if you are an admirer of Marques’s work like me!
You will be pleasantly surprised to see some of the city’s best restaurants and the number of great hotels in the area! And feel free to walk around the tiny district of La Matuna, best known for its Muelle de los Pegasos waterfront pier with authentic statues!

3. Getsemani – where to stay in Cartagena for nightlife
Getsemani is located South of the Old Town and is considered the best area for backpackers and party people (especially singles!). It used to be an unsafe area, but it is changing fast now, with many hipster cafes and alternative bars popping up here and there.
This is also one of the coolest and most bustling Cartagena neighborhoods, where you will find vibrant street art and graffiti on every corner. It’s called “Brooklyn of Cartagena” for a good reason!
If you are from the younger crowd, I recommend staying somewhere around Plaza de la Trinidad (majestic street performers can be seen here!), as this is a popular hang-out place where you can meet fellow travelers.
Popular nearby parks like Centenario Park and Espíritu Del Manglar Park are perfect places to relax after a fun night out!
Staying in Getsemani also means you’ll be close to the San Felipe de Barajas Fort (map), a captivating hilltop from the 1600s with crazy tunnel networks that just wait to be explored!
Safety advice: Just stick to well-lit and busy areas in Getsemani if you walk around at night, and you’ll be good to go!

4. Bocagrande & Laquito – best area for luxury
Bocagrande is a peninsula located just outside of the Walled City. This would be a great choice if you are looking for beachfront hotels not far from the Center.
Also, this area is much quieter at night than the Center, so if you appreciate peace at night but want to be active during the day, Bocagrande is a great choice.
Bocagrande is also known as “The Miami Beach of Cartagena”! There are lots of skyscrapers and international big-chain high-rise hotels like Hilton and Hyatt if you are looking for well-known names.
You’ll be a short walk from the Playa de Bocagrande, so catching a tan will be easy! You also won’t have to worry about grocery shopping, as tons of stores are available closer to the water!
Bocagrande is one of the most expensive areas not only in Cartagena but in the entire of Colombia, hosting gated communities and wealthy families. Don’t be surprised if prices here are higher and if you’ll mostly find luxurious and modern accommodations.
El Laquito area is located to the West of the peninsula, and it is called this because it has a big lake. It’s a super nice area to be in, that is where you will find most of the big international chain hotels. It’s also safe, so if you’re traveling with family or just looking for a nice relaxing vacation in the city, I recommend staying here!

Oz Hotel Luxury is another recommendation for an upscale hotel in the area! It’s close to the beach, has a delicious buffet breakfast, and elegant rooms with a great view!

5. Marbella – where to stay in Cartagena on a budget
Much like the nearby El Cabrero and Crespo districts, Marbella is a residential area stretching along the Caribbean Sea coast close to the airport. It’s mostly known for affordable accommodation and vicinity to the beach.
You’ll be 25 minutes away on foot/7 min by car from San Diego, so you can even walk there if you stay on the area’s Western end! You will need a cab if you’re based further East, though.
You won’t find notable attractions here (besides the beach and the colorful Letras de Cartagena monument, of course!), but you will find super cheap apartments if you want to save money!
Marbella is a great place to stay for the Independence Festivities in November! You can even watch the parades from your hotel balcony!
Cartagena Independence Festivities celebrate Colombia’s independence around November 11th every year, with beautiful parades in multiple cities!
Given the residential nature of this district, you will find a few late-night dining places. Also, the locals recommend avoiding major roads nearby at night. It’s best to get around by car at this time to avoid any unpleasant situations!

6. La Boquilla (Zona Norte) – where to stay for seclusion
The Zona Norte is the Northernmost part of Cartagena, better known as La Boquilla. Technically, the district Morros is also part of Zona Norte, but it’s a small condo block that is not popular among tourists.
If you stay in Zona Norte, make La Boquilla your base. A BIG plus of staying here is that the beaches are far less crowded than other areas! It’s just a perfect spot for seclusion and beach vacation!
Of course, this also means you’ll be some 15 minutes by car away from the Historic Center and the attractions.
In this area, you’ll find plenty of small, local restaurants where you can enjoy fresh seafood without breaking the bank! You can also take classes in a kitesurfing school to get some adrenaline pumping!
Most of the accommodation here is in the form of apartments, but you can also find a few 5-star hotels.

7. Manga – where to stay in Cartagena for a local feel
Manga is a nice neighborhood to stay in to experience the truly local life in Cartagena. The area is 12 minutes away by car from Cartagena’s historic City Center, but you can also walk there in less than 30 minutes.
You won’t find many spots for tourists here, but an important one is the Fuerte de San Sebastian del Pastelillo, a colonial-era fort with beautiful views.
Overall, this district has refreshing views of the bay and some cool eateries (check out Restaurante D’Res for amazing steaks!), so you’ll surely find fun things to do here. I also noticed that accommodation here is cheaper, so you can save a few bucks by staying in Manga.
Since Manga is a residential neighborhood, it doesn’t feature luxury hotels. If you want to splurge on your stay, check out the offers in the nearby Getsemani or Bocagrande! All I found in Manga was this luxury apartment on Airbnb:

BONUS 1: Where to stay in Rosario Islands
Rosario Islands is an archipelago in Colombia located approximately 100 km (~62 miles) from Cartagena. If you have some extra time, I BEG you to visit it! You can do it on a day trip, but spending a couple of nights there to get away from the city and enjoy those pristine beaches is preferred.
NOTE: Most hotels offer an all-inclusive option, which I highly recommend unless you are staying in a big hotel with a couple of nearby restaurants.
The archipelago has many islands, with Baru, Grande, and Marina being the most popular. I have selected some cool options for you on those 3.
