Now that you know more about how Hanoi is organized, here’s everything you need to know about the 4 top neighborhoods to stay in Hanoi:
1. The Old Quarter / Hoan Kiem – where to stay in Hanoi for the first time
The Old Quarter is also called Hoan Kiem, and it’s the historical heart and soul of the city! This is also the part where I recommend staying for the first time.
Lots of interesting attractions are located in the Hoan Kiem district, including Hoan Kiem Lake (with the Ngoc Son Temple in it), Bach Ma Temple (one of Hanoi’s 4 sacred temples), weekend Night Market, and Dong Xuan Market (among the largest markets in the city).
With 5 million (!!) motorbikes owned by its 7 million citizens, traffic in Hanoi can be chaotic and crossing a street is a whole new adventure – I recommend just following the locals. Usually bikes do not stop, they just go around you 🙂
You’ll also find Beer Street (Ta Hien), the ultimate nightlife destination in the area! Grab a beer, chill in the local bars, and meet the locals in a bustling atmosphere!
Nearby, you’ll also find the French Quarter, an area dating from the times of French presence in the region (19th and 20th centuries), which now has some of the most luxurious hotels. The Hoa Lo Prison from the colonialist period and the Vietnam National Museum of History are top attractions.
NOTE: Overall, the Hoan Kiem district is pretty noisy both day and night. So, an important tip when staying here is to avoid hotels on large streets! I remember I was trying to work on my laptop in one of the cafes – it was close to impossible because of constant honking from the street until I wore my noise canceling headphones.
The area is equally attractive to backpackers and luxury seekers because of its diverse accommodation offers.
Luxury (US$100 and up)
- Sofitel Legend Metropole Hanoi – Enjoy an elegant French hotel with a central location in the Old Quarter! The 5-star hotel is set in a historic building dating from 1901. It has a pampering spa, a heated swimming pool, and air-conditioned rooms, and it’s ideally situated just 500 m from Hoan Kiem Lake.
- Hanoi La Sinfonia Majesty Hotel & Spa – Considered one of the best hotels in Hanoi’s Old Quarter, La Sinfonia has a fantastic location right next to Hoan Kiem Lake! You can also enjoy their fabulous breakfast, air-conditioned rooms, spa, and wellness center!
Mid-range (US$50 – US$100)
Due to the hard competition in Hanoi’s hotel scene, middle-priced hotels are often as good as luxury hotels in Vietnam, especially in the Old Quarter (Hoan Kiem)!
- Hanoi Marvellous Hotel Spa – For a great Hanoi boutique hotel option in the Old Quarter (Hoan Kiem), you can head to Hanoi Marvellous Hotel Spa! You can enjoy panoramic city views from their top floor and get delicious room service from their on-site Vietnamese and European cuisine restaurant!
- Hanoi Pearl Hotel – Very tastefully decorated, this is one of the most affordable mid-range hotels. Just walking distance from Hanoi’s most famous landmarks in the Old Quarter, its location is one of its highlights. Also, check out the night views from their rooftop bar!
Budget (up to US$50)
- Hanoi Boutique House – This budget boutique house is within reach of the Old City gate and has free Wi-Fi, a bar, a 24-hour front desk, and an airport shuttle – everything you need for a perfect budget stay!
- Cheers Hostel Hanoi – Centrally-located hostel with private and shared rooms, private bathrooms, free Wi-Fi, and amazing staff!
2. West Lake / Tay Ho – where to stay in Hanoi for nightlife
West Lake or Tay Ho is more expat/residential area. This is a perfect place in Hanoi if you are looking for a bit of quiet in the city while not being too far from the hustle and bustle (15 min by car).
You can enjoy a wide range of upscale accommodations and fine-dining restaurants here. Also, many luxurious hotels are located in the West Lake area, but this doesn’t mean there aren’t some amazing places for budget travelers either!
Tourist attractions include the 1500-year-old Tran Quoc Pagoda (map) it is the oldest Buddhist pagoda in the city!, Ho Tay Water Park, and the wood-carved Van Nien Pagoda!
This district is called Tay Ho because it is near Tay Ho Lake. This is also an amazing area to stay for trying the best gastronomy in Hanoi, as you’ll find a thrilling local food scene, including the 6 Degrees with iconic views of the lake!
The large presence of expats is partly why the area has a Western feel. If you want to blend in nicely and not worry too much about the language barrier, stay here since most people will speak English!
Whether you’re into fine dining or nightlife, you’ll find it all in West Lake!
That being said, here are the best stays in the West Lake area I have selected for you:
Luxury (US$100 and up)
- InterContinental Hanoi West Lake – A lovely Hanoi West Lake hotel in Vietnamese décor beside the ancient pagoda. Fall in love with the interior, wooden floors, walk-in rain showers, and 3 on-site restaurants!
- Sheraton Hanoi Hotel – A 5-star treatment with views of the West Lake. It is one of the best upscale hotels in the area, with comfy rooms, delicious daily buffet breakfast, and tons of authentic Vietnamese food places nearby!
Mid-range (US$40 – US$100)
- Parosand Hanoi Hotel – This great value-for-money hotel features a shared lounge, select rooms with a balcony, a free airport shuttle, and an on-site bar. They have family rooms and complimentary breakfast, making this a great place to stay if you’re coming with kids!
- The Euphoria Hotel – This 4-star accommodation is next to Ho Tay Lake, offering free parking and sightseeing tours nearby. Check out their private apartment with a garden view; it’s so modern and cozy!
Budget (up to US$40)
- Aloha Hotel – A gorgeous 2-star hotel on the shores of the Ho Tay Lake with free parking and Wi-Fi. Their Superior Double Rooms are perfect for couples who are traveling light!
- Tuna Hostel Ha Noi – Here’s another ideal property where you can book a room to enjoy some very affordable prices! The staff is super friendly and always willing to help, and you’ll also get to enjoy a shared kitchen and currency exchange services!
3. Ba Dinh & Truc Bach – where to stay in Hanoi with a family
Ba Dinh and Truck Bach are located south of To Hay Lake and are some 5 km West from the Old Quarter which is about 20 min by car.
If you’d like to stay next to the biggest landmarks, such as the Temple of Literature (technically in Dong Da, bordering Ba Dinh) or Thang Long Imperial Citadel, dating from the early 11th century, this is your area!
The Temple of Literature was built in 1070 as the country’s first national university! It was dedicated to Confucius, his disciples, and the scholars of Vietnam. Today, it’s one of Vietnam’s most important cultural landmarks!
Other interesting and unmissable sights in this neighborhood include Truc Bach Lake and Hanoi Botanical Garden featuring 50 acres of trails and hiking routes, so make sure to add them to your itinerary! Ba Dinh is also the political center of Vietnam so you will find many government buildings around there too.

Also, one of the 3 major churches in Hanoi, Cửa Bắc Church, is located here. Of course, it was also built by the French!
Ba Dinh district is my top recommendation for people traveling to Hanoi with their family and kids, as this area is a bit more laid-back than the Old Quarter.
Also, you’ll find the urban Cau Giay area hosting the Vietnam Museum of Ethnology just West of Ba Dinh. Visiting the museum is one of the best things to do in Hanoi with kids!
Luxury (US$100 and up)
- Lotte Hotel Hanoi – An ultimate luxurious stay in the Hanoi Ba Dinh district with outdoor and indoor swimming pools, a sauna, a gym, and fabulous suites. The Lotte Hotel is non-smoking, there are 4 on-site restaurants, and the staff can assist you with car rentals and tours!
- Hanoi Le Jardin Hotel & Spa – Here’s another superb accommodation in Ba Dinh close to Truc Bach Lake, where you can enjoy a full luxury service! This 4-star hotel awaits with fabulous décor, a spa and wellness center, and delicious breakfast!
Mid-range (US$40 – US$100)
- Hanoi Dragon Boutique Hotel – A lovely Hanoi hotel near Hoan Kiem Lake with an on-site restaurant, free Wi-Fi, family rooms, and a great complimentary breakfast. They also have currency exchange services – ask the front desk if you need them!
- The Galaxy Home – Ideally nestled away from the main street so you can get a good night’s sleep, this apartment is modern and has a lovely balcony. It will be your home away from home in Hanoi!
Budget (up to US$40)
- Tryst Hotel – An excellent budget stay with extra-large beds, modern rooms, and family-friendly facilities. You’ll be 10 minutes away from the central area on foot!
- Da Tree Homestay – A cozy and beautiful room in a great location just next to the Botanical Garden! They serve free tea and coffee and have the most caring and friendly hosts!
4. Hai Ba Trung – where to stay in Hanoi for a local, urban feel
This is a cool place to stay in Hanoi, perfect for youngsters looking for a wild atmosphere! This neighborhood is about 4 km from the Old Quarter to the South, with the Hanoi Opera House between the two.
It’s an urban district lined with modern skyscrapers, universities, shopping opportunities, and cinemas. You’ll find students, locals, and tourists roaming the streets of this vibrant neighborhood.
The green Thong Nhat Park and the scenic Thien Quant Lake are located here, making this neighborhood perfect for romantic walks during sunset.
Overall, Hai Ba Trung is a great base if you want to be surrounded by many modern shops (for all tastes and budgets), restaurants, and cafes.
Luxury (US$90 and up)
- La Casa Hanoi Hotel – This fabulous hotel awaits with a 4-star service, an outdoor pool, a spa, a sauna and other amazing facilities! They also offer a free airport shuttle and fabulous breakfast, so you’re looking at incredible value for the price!
- Nesta Hanoi – This 4-star accommodation has plenty of advantages, including an international restaurant, vicinity to the Thien Quant Lake, and free Wi-Fi. Enjoy their fitness center, spa and wellness, and family rooms for up to 3 guests!
Mid-range (US$30 – US$90)
- Adonis Hotel – This 2-star hotel offers fantastic value for money with their rooms that are comfortable, modern, and come with excellent city views! Plus, the Hoam Kiem Lake is just 15 minutes on foot!
- My House Hotel Hanoi – A 3-star hotel 2 km from the Opera House with beautiful rooms, a 24-hour front desk, and a spa and wellness center. They have free cancellation, which is perfect if you happen to make some last-minute changes to your itinerary!
Budget (up to US$30)
- Tonkin Homestay – This superb homestay is very comfortable and affordable! You can use the shared kitchen or the cute garden on the 6th floor, both of which are a nice bonus!
- Gallant Hotel – Check out their classic Vietnamese-style room décor and modern amenities like free parking, room service, free Wi-Fi, flat-screen TVs, AC in rooms, and so much more at such an affordable price!
Best apartments in Hanoi, Vietnam
Choosing an apartment for your stay in Hanoi will give you more independence and comfort. I am a big fan of staying in apartments during my travels because it feels less touristy and more local-like.
Here’s my choice of the best apartments in Hanoi sorted by budget, so you can just pick your favorite one and go.
Luxury (US$160 and up)
- Fraser Suites Hanoi – Located in the stunning Hanoi West Lake neighborhood of Hanoi (Tay Ho), the Fraser Suits is the ultimate 5-star apartment in Hanoi! With a pool area that looks like you’ve stepped in the jungle and a well-equipped gym, make sure you take a day off of sightseeing and relax right here!
- Elegant Suites Westlake – This fabulous apartment has an outdoor pool, a gym, and a free airport shuttle. Certain apartments have a washing machine, which is super convenient for longer stays! The scenic views of the nearby lake are to die for!
Mid-range (US$50 – US$160)
- Atlanta Residences – Absolutely beautiful suites for families and couples within a short distance from the Old Quarter. Plenty of restaurants nearby, spacious and modern rooms, and a fully equipped kitchen make this place attractive to various types of travelers!
- Hanoi Central Hotel & Residences – Conveniently located very close to Hoan Kiem Lake in Hanoi Old Quarter, this apartment will make for your best home away from home! The welcoming staff, laundry facilities in your own apartment, and location convenience will make you fall in love with this place!
Budget (up to US$50)
- LUCK APART 05 – Situated just a few minutes from the scenic Tay Ho Lake, this recently renovated apartment can fit up to 4 guests and has free parking, an on-site bar, and a fully equipped kitchen.
- Zody House – Exceptional value for money near the railway station and the Fine Arts museum. The apartments are compact but have everything you need for a home-away-from-home stay, including a full kitchen and a washing machine.
BONUS: Best hotels near Hanoi Airport
The Noi Bai International Airport (HAN) is located around 28 km from the City Center. The ride from the Old Quarter can take 30 to 60 minutes, depending on the traffic.
If you have a transfer flight in Hanoi or have a very late/early flight, I recommend staying in one of the airport hotels!
Now bear in mind that both Terminal 1 and 2 have sleep pod hotels (Terminal 1 Pod, Terminal 2 Pod), but there are also a few good proper hotels nearby.
NOTE: You’ll find dozens of hotels around the Hanoi airport, but many have terrible ratings, so I have made your job easy and filtered out the top-rated ones.
NOTE 2: I couldn’t find any luxurious hotels right next to the airport, so I’m recommending the closest possible upscale hotel below.
- Luxury: Fraser Residence Hanoi – If you’d like to stay at the closest luxury hotel to the airport, this could be it! It’s a sophisticated new hotel with spacious rooms and impeccable décor. You can even stretch your legs at their onsite gym before or after your flight! Do note that it may still take you 30 minutes to get to the airport, so if distance is of utmost priority, consider downgrading to one of the mid-range options below.
- Mid-range: Paragon Noi Bai – Situated just outside the airport, this hotel is perfect if you have an overlay or an early/late flight. They even offer free transfers to and from the airport.
- Mid-range: HAAP Transit Hotel – A solid option for budget-conscious travelers. Enjoy comfortable beds and complimentary breakfast before or after your flight, use their free parking, or pay for airport transfer.
- Budget: New Sky Airport Hotel – Super conveniently located hotel with 3 on-site restaurants and friendly staff willing to pick you up from the airport any time of the day (or night) for a reasonable fee. Free hot drinks are included in rooms!
